The mother of Anakin Skywalker was sold as a paying debt to Watto, the toydarian, both Shmi and Anakin were slaves when they arrive to Tatooine. Previously owned by Gargulla The Hutt, Shmi arrived with her son Anakin when he was just 3 years old. She began assisting Watto with his local junk shop until Anakin took over on helping the toydarian. One day, Anakin came home with a few visitors: A jedi master, a clumsy Gungan and a lovely handmaiden. The group was received by Shmi with surprise, however a friendly meal was also given to the visitors. Shmi knew, as the wise jedi Qui-Gon told her, that the visit was no coincidence, this visit was the will of the Force, was a sign of the important role her son has yet to play. A little opposed first, she decided to help the visitors on their ship repairments, allowing Anakin to compete on a pod racing event on Boonta Eve, that way the money earned would be enough to buy the parts from Watto, and later on, Qui-Gonn would make a bet with the junkdealer in order to free Anakin from slavery. As Anakin, won his ticket to freedom on the pod racing event. But this "ticket" was for him only, and not for his mother. On a sadly meeting both mother and son said goodbye, Shmi encouraged her boy to not look back and to concentrate on the future, Anakin promised to return and to fulfill his desire of freedom for all the slaves", as the boy walked behind the jedi master, Shmi saw her young son taking his firsts steps into a larger world.
