A mastermind and skillfull politician, Senator Palpatine of Naboo, was in negotiation with the Senate when Naboo was invaded. When the queen decided to travel to Naboo, Palpatine seized the opportunity to convince her to give the Chancellor Valorum, a vote of "no confidence". Eventually Palpatine will become the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, an important step on his quest for power.
