Whenever Queen Amidala is in danger, she disguises herself as one of her own handmaidens, taking the name Padmé Naberrie. The identical hood dresses and similar appearence of Amidala's handmaidens make it easy for Padmé to appear and dissapear quietly from a group, exchanging roles with Sabé who is impersonating the queen when her majesty is on disguise as Padmé. When the Royal Starship of Naboo was forced landed on Tatooine for repairs, the Queen wanted to explore the planet for herself so she disguised as Padmé and convinced jedi master Qui-Gon to take her along looking for the parts needed for the repairs. The jedi master assumed she was one of the queen's maidens, and somewhat she didnt approve Qui-Gon's methods of looking for solutions to their problems, but she respected the decisions of the old jedi master, mostly because she wanted to keep her guise a secret from everybody. It was during this journey on Tatooine, both Padmé and Qui-Gon along with Jar Jar and the droid R2-D2, encountered a gifted young boy named Anakin, who was an slave working in a junkshop for a dealer named Watto. In an instant Padmé and Anakin begin an affective but yet simple relationship, that will develop more on years to come. When Watto refused to accept Republic Credits as payment for the parts, young Anakin offered his help to the group on obtaining the parts piloting a pod race. Encouraged by the jedi Qui-Gon, who sensed a strong connection of the Force on the boy, Anakin decided to tag along with the group enroute Coruscant to become a jedi. Padmé expressed his caring for the boy, but she had to keep her mind on the mission ahead. Padmé finally revealed her identity when asking for help on Naboo's most desesperate hour, to the Gungan leader Boss Nass with much surprise to everybody else, including Anakin who always felt a connection with Padmé.. After the victory of Naboo over the Trade Federation Droid Army, Anakin gave a look to the queen, and she responded back with a smile. A strong bond have been born between the two.
